Inhalt Abstract

Modification of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) powder was performed using radiation source of electron beam (EB) to enhance simultaneously the poor wetting and dispersion characteristics through chemical coupling with Ethylene-Propylene-Diene-Monomer (EPDM) rubber. The effect of EB modification of PTFE powder on the compatibility, mechanical and tribological properties of EPDM composite prepared by low-temperature shear mixing is investigated. The friction and wear properties of PTFE-EPDM composites have been investiagted with the help of pin on disk tribometer without lubrication for a testing time of 2 hrs in atmospheric conditions at a sliding speed and applied normal load of 0.05 ms-1 and FN = 1 N, respectively. PTFE-EPDM compounds crosslinked with EB shows improved mechanical as well as tribological properties. The enhanced compatibility of PTFE powder resulting from the chemical coupling of PTFE powder with EPDM has been found crucial for mechanical, friction and wear properties.
